OUR PLASMA CUTTING
WORKING CAPABILITIES
ROBOFACTURING3D’s Manufacturing Partners use CNC plasma machines that enable us to cut metal with a thickness of 1 to 50 mm. The range of materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium or brass.
We can produce complex parts using two types of CNC plasma cutters, 2 and 3 axis, with outstanding accuracy and repeatability results. Once the parts have been manufactured, they can be post-processed upon request with coating, heat-treatment and others.
For cutting small parts we recommend other of our technologies, such as Laser Cutting, since during Plasma Cutting the temperature is so high that small parts can become deformed. For metal parts with thicknesses greater than 50 mm we recommend WaterJet Cutting.

LOWER COST
One of the big benefits is the lower cost of a Plasma Cutting service compared to other cutting methods. The lower price for the service derives from different aspects: higher cutting speed and lower operational cost.
CUTTING SPEED
One of the main benefits of Plasma Cutting service is its quickness. This is especially evident with metal plates. The increased speed enables us to produce larger quantities in a given time-frame, lessening the cost per part.
GOOD CUTTING QUALITY
Plasma Cutting provides good clean cuts, especially with small to medium size thicknesses (up to 30 mm), although its cutting kerf is larger compared to other methods.
LOW HEAT INPUT
Plasma cutters focus the outgoing plasma jet using a nozzle, which allows to concentrate the energy into a small dot. This means a lower power consumption to perform a cut.
SMALL HEAT-AFFECTED ZONE
The material properties and microstructure change in the heat-affected zone, as well as it can also cause material warping. Plasma Cutting allows to focus and reduce the heat-affected zones, thus helping to prevent its non desired effects.
LOW OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Plasma cutters use compressed air and electricity to operate. This means that there is no expensive equipment needed to accompany a plasma cutter.
SHORT SET UP
The set up time is kept to a minimum because there is no need for preheating the metal before cutting.
VERSATILITY
This cutting method lets you cut through a stack of material. Moreover, the starting cutting process is almost instantaneous minimizing material warping.

SURFACE FINISHES
STANDARD (AS MACHINED)
– Surface roughness Ra = 3.2 μm (micrometres). Roughness ISO grade N8.
– Available to all metals and plastics.
It is our standard and quickest finish option. Tool marks are visible. Sharp edges and burrs are removed upon request. The colour of the finish will be the natural colour of the material.
IMPROVED MACHINED FINISH
– Surface roughness Ra = 1.6 μm (micrometres). Roughness ISO grade N7.
– Available to all metals and plastics.
The surface roughness will be improved during the CNC machining process itself by slower machining processes. Tool marks are visible, but less obvious. Sharp edges and burrs are removed upon request. The colour of the finish will be the natural colour of the material.
ANODIZING TYPE II OR DECORATIVE
– Corrosion-resistant finish.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to all aluminum materials.
The Type II anodizing process improves the aluminum properties increasing corrosion resistance and producing a uniform finish. ROBOFACTURING3D offers clear or black anodize coating, as well as it can be dyed in multiple colours (available upon request). Standard coating thickness 0,02 to 0,03 mm.
ANODIZING TYPE III OR HARDCOAT
– Corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant finish.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to all aluminum materials.
The Type III anodizing process produces a thicker layer than Type II, adding a wear-resistant properties in addition to the previous corrosion-resistant indicated in Type II. You can find a clear or black anodize coating. Standard coating thickness 0,02 to 0,07 mm.
BEAD BLASTING
– Different grits depending on the size of the bead.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to all metals.
Bead blasting is often used in creating a smooth uniform matte or satin surface finish on machined parts. It is used mainly for visual appearance. Tool marks and sharp edges are removed. It is a very useful surface treatment on parts manufactured by die casting or to improve the surface finish of the part before applying a secondary surface finish, for example anodizing.
ELECTROPOLISHING
– Surface roughness Ra = 0.8 μm (micrometres). Roughness ISO grade N6.
– Improve the appearance and the corrosion resistance.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to all metals.
Electropolishing improves the appearance and the corrosion resistance by reducing the surface roughness. The colour of the finish will be the natural colour of the metal.
POWDER COATING
– Excellent corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant finish.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to all metals.
Powder coatings can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings. Also, powder coated parts have fewer appearance differences than liquid coated parts between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces. Curing time is significantly faster with powder coatings. ROBOFACTURING3D offers a clear or black powder coating, but also can be finished in multiple colours (available upon request).
BRUSHING
– Surface roughness Ra = 0.8 μm to 1.6 μm (micrometres). Roughness ISO from grade N6 to grade N7.
– Polishing the metal to improve the appearance.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to all metals.
Brushing the metal will allow a satin finish. It allows to improve the surface roughness of the part but does not improve corrosion resistance since it does not modify the mechanical properties of the metal. The colour of the finish will be the natural colour of the metal.
CHEM FILM (CHROMATE CONVERSION COATING)
– Improve the corrosion resistance and maintain the conductivity properties.
– Masking requirements to be indicated in the technical drawings.
– Available to aluminum and alloys.
A chemical coating will be applied to the metal to improve the corrosion resistance. It can be used as a base for paint. The colour of the finish ROBOFACTURING3D offers is clear, yellow or golden.
TOLERANCES
SHEET METAL MACHINING
For sheet metal features of size (length, width, height, diameter) and location (position, concentricity, symmetry) apply tolerances as follows if:
– Just a 3D file is supplied;
– A technical drawing is supplied but no tolerances specified;
– And no tolerances are specified throughout our quote platform.
Forming and bending: ± 0.50mm
Linear dimensions excluding locations to bends:
0 Decimal Places 1 Decimal Place 2 Decimal Places |
± 0.50mm ± 0.25mm ± 0.25mm |
Diameters with inserts: ± 0.10mm
Surface roughness: Ra = 3.2 μm
